Part 5 · How to evaluate the debate

What should we conclude from all these arguments?

The aim is not to produce a winner by accumulation. It is to understand what each argument actually establishes, which premises are controversial, and where different arguments overlap.

How arguments should be evaluated

A good debate is not decided by counting arguments. Ten weak arguments do not necessarily outweigh one strong argument. Likewise, an unanswered objection does not automatically make the original claim false.

Separate the conclusion from the evidence

An argument can provide evidence for a conclusion without proving it. Fine-tuning might raise the probability of design without logically entailing design.

Strong theistic case

“Evidence can accumulate. Several independent arguments may jointly make a worldview more plausible.”

Strong skeptical case

“Arguments are not automatically independent. Fine-tuning, mathematical order and laws of nature can share the same background assumptions and therefore should not be counted as three completely separate pieces of evidence.”

Watch the gap between ‘possible’ and ‘probable’

A theist can often show that a naturalistic explanation is not logically necessary. A skeptic can often show that a theistic explanation is not logically necessary. Neither result alone decides probability.

Strong theistic case

“If theism explains a fact better, it can raise the posterior probability of theism even without deductive certainty.”

Strong skeptical case

“Calling God a possible explanation is cheap unless there is evidence that makes God more expected than competing explanations.”

Avoid God-of-the-gaps reasoning

A gap in current science can be a legitimate question without being positive evidence for God.

Strong theistic case

“Some questions may be genuinely metaphysical and not solvable by empirical science alone.”

Strong skeptical case

“Historically, unexplained phenomena have often acquired natural explanations. ‘We don't know’ should remain ‘we don't know’ until additional evidence appears.”

Avoid naturalism-of-the-gaps too

The opposite mistake is assuming that because science has explained many things naturally, every metaphysical question must eventually have a naturalistic explanation.

Strong theistic case

“Scientific success does not logically prove metaphysical naturalism.”

Strong skeptical case

“The track record of natural explanations gives us a strong methodological reason not to introduce supernatural causes without evidence.”

Distinguish generic theism from a particular religion

A cosmological argument might, at most, support a creator or necessary foundation. It does not by itself establish Christianity, Islam or another tradition.

Strong theistic case

“Once generic theism is plausible, revelation and historical evidence can narrow the field.”

Strong skeptical case

“Each additional theological claim needs independent support. Moving from ‘a cause exists’ to ‘this scripture is divine’ is a large evidential jump.”

Where the disagreement remains: The best evaluation is often conditional: if these premises are true, the conclusion follows; if those alternatives are better supported, the inference weakens.

Did time and the universe have a beginning?

Strong theistic case

Kalam, Big Bang interpretations and entropy.

Strong skeptical case

Uncertainty about ultimate cosmology, eternal/cyclic/bounce models and the conceptual problem of causation without prior time.

Cosmic order

Why do the constants and initial conditions permit life and mathematical structure?

Strong theistic case

Fine-tuning, anthropic design, mathematical order and laws of nature.

Strong skeptical case

Anthropic selection, multiverse, probability/measure problems and the possibility that laws are brute or necessary.

Biology

Why does life look designed?

Strong theistic case

Teleology, information, specified complexity, irreducible complexity and origin-of-life gaps.

Natural selection, exaptation, chemistry and the distinction between an unsolved problem and evidence for design.

Mind

Why is there consciousness, reason, intentionality and personal identity?

Consciousness, qualia, intentionality, reason and soul-based explanations.

Physicalism, emergentism, functionalism, evolutionary reliability and psychological continuity.

Value

Are morality, dignity, meaning and justice objective?

Do humans encounter God?

Strong theistic case

Religious experience, mystical experience, testimony, properly basic belief and conversion.

Conflicting experiences, cognitive science, neurological mechanisms, testimony problems and religious diversity.

Challenge

Why would a good God allow suffering and remain hidden?

Strong theistic case

Free will, soul-making, skeptical theism and possible divine purposes.

Evidential evil, natural evil, animal suffering, gratuitous evil, hiddenness and reasonable nonbelief.

Religion

Can we move from generic theism to a particular religion?

Strong theistic case

Miracles, prophecy, preservation, literary arguments, resurrection and historical movement evidence.

Strong skeptical case

Alternative explanations, textual development, retrospective interpretation, testimony limitations and competing revelations.

Where the disagreement remains: This map intentionally allows some overlap. The overlap is useful when it helps a reader see how one argument connects to another.

Technical glossary

Aseity

Self-existence; not depending on anything outside oneself.

Contingent

Something that could have been different or might not have existed.

Necessary

Something that cannot fail to exist, given the relevant philosophical definition.

Brute fact

A fact accepted without a deeper explanation.

PSR

Principle of Sufficient Reason: the idea that things have explanations.

Kalam

A cosmological argument centered on a beginning of the universe.

Fine-tuning

The claim that physical parameters lie within ranges compatible with complex life.

Anthropic principle

Reasoning that conditions observations on the existence of observers.

Qualia

Subjective qualities of experience, such as the felt quality of red.

Intentionality

The aboutness or representational character of mental states.

Physicalism

The view that reality is fundamentally physical.

Compatibilism

The view that meaningful free will can coexist with determinism.

Moral realism

The view that some moral claims are objectively true or false.

Euthyphro dilemma

The question whether things are good because God commands them or God commands them because they are good.

Modal logic

Logic concerned with necessity and possibility.

Properly basic belief

A belief that can be rational without being inferred from other beliefs.

Skeptical theism

Caution about assuming humans can know God's reasons from apparent evidence.

Apophenia

The tendency to perceive meaningful patterns in unrelated or random events.

Concordism

Interpreting an ancient religious text as matching later scientific discoveries.

Abiogenesis

Research into how life could arise from nonliving chemistry.

What this site should not tell the reader

Not: “This argument proves God.”

Not: “Science proves atheism.”

Not: “Nobody knows, therefore both sides are equally likely.”

Instead: “Here is the argument. Here are its assumptions. Here is the strongest objection. Here is the strongest response. Here is what the evidence can and cannot establish.”
