The universe, its beginning, and why it looks the way it does

These arguments ask whether the existence and structure of the physical world are better explained by God, by natural explanations, or by some ultimate fact that needs no further explanation.

In this part

Why is there something rather than nothing?

This is the broad family of cosmological arguments. The different versions ask related but importantly different questions: Why does anything exist? Why does a contingent thing exist? Can there be an endless chain of explanations? Does reality need a necessary foundation? And if there is such a foundation, does it have to be God? The discussion below keeps those distinctions visible without turning them into unrelated chapters.

1. Contingency: why does dependent reality exist?

A contingent thing is something whose existence is not unavoidable. You, a tree, Earth, and—on many philosophical views—the physical universe could have been different or might not have existed. The contingency argument asks whether a reality made up of contingent things can be the ultimate explanation of itself.

Strong theistic case

“Look at the things around us. They don't contain the reason for their own existence. A tree exists because of earlier conditions; a planet exists because of cosmic processes; a person exists because of parents and biological history. If everything ultimately depends on something else, what explains the existence of the dependent reality as a whole? A necessary foundation would stop the explanation from being endlessly dependent.”

Strong skeptical case

“You have shown that individual things have explanations. You haven't shown that the totality must have an explanation outside itself. Perhaps reality ultimately contains a fundamental fact that has no deeper explanation. And even if there is something necessary, why assume it is a personal God?”

Simple example: Imagine that every person in a room says, “I received this book from someone else.” Even if every individual handoff is explained, you can still ask where the book ultimately came from. But the analogy has limits: the universe is not literally a chain of people handing an object around.
Technical point: the Principle of Sufficient Reason

The Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR) says, roughly, that reality does not contain arbitrary unexplained facts. Some cosmological arguments rely heavily on it. A skeptic can challenge the PSR itself: perhaps some facts are simply brute facts. So the argument is not “contingent things exist, therefore God” but rather “if contingent reality requires an ultimate explanation, what could that explanation be?”

2. Necessary being: can the explanation stop somewhere?

A necessary being is proposed as a reality that does not depend on something else for its existence. Classical theism identifies this with God, but the logical step from “something necessary exists” to “the necessary thing is God” needs separate justification.

Strong theistic case

“If everything were contingent, there would be nothing that could ultimately account for why contingent reality exists. A necessary reality provides a non-dependent foundation. God is not being treated as one more object that happens to exist; God is proposed as the kind of reality whose existence is not derived from anything else.”

Strong skeptical case

“Why can't the physical universe, or some deeper physical reality, be necessary? And even if a necessary reality exists, why must it be conscious, intelligent, morally perfect or interested in humans? The argument needs additional steps before it reaches classical theism.”

Simple example: Saying “the chain eventually reaches something that doesn't borrow its existence” is not yet the same as saying “the final thing is a person.” The second claim needs its own argument.

3. Infinite regress: can explanations continue forever?

An infinite regress occurs when each explanation points to another explanation with no ultimate foundation. Some theistic arguments say an infinite regress of this kind cannot explain why anything exists. But “infinite regress” is not automatically a contradiction: philosophers distinguish different kinds of regress.

Strong theistic case

“If every member of an explanatory chain depends on another member, and there is never anything independent, then nothing in the chain ultimately explains why the chain exists. An infinite number of borrowed explanations does not obviously produce an original source.”

Strong skeptical case

“An infinite series does not necessarily have to have a first member. Mathematics contains perfectly coherent infinite structures. If every member has an explanation, demanding an additional explanation for the entire infinite series may be an unjustified extra requirement.”

Simple example: Suppose every book in an infinite library was copied from another book. You can still ask where the information ultimately came from—but whether that question has to have an answer is precisely what is disputed.
Important distinction: temporal vs explanatory regress

A temporal regress asks whether there were infinitely many earlier events. An explanatory regress asks whether each thing depends on something else for its existence. These are not the same. A universe could be eternal in time while still, on a theistic view, depending continuously on a necessary foundation. Conversely, a universe could have a first moment without that alone proving that the first cause is God.

4. The argument from nothingness: was “absolute nothing” ever a real alternative?

Sometimes the debate is framed as: “Why is there something rather than absolutely nothing?” But this wording hides a difficult philosophical assumption: that absolute nothingness is a genuine possible state. “Nothing” here means not empty space, not a vacuum, and not a quantum field—it means literally no things, no space, no time, no laws and no properties.

Strong theistic case

“If absolute nothingness were genuinely possible, there would be no reason for anything to exist. The existence of reality therefore calls for an explanation, and God can provide a necessary explanation.”

Strong skeptical case

“Perhaps ‘absolute nothing’ is not a genuine possibility. There may be no state in which literally nothing exists. Asking why there is something rather than nothing could therefore be like asking why a contradiction was not the case.”

Simple example: “An empty room” is not nothing: the room, its space, its walls and its laws still exist. Philosophical absolute nothingness is much stronger than an empty universe.

5. Ground of Being: is God supposed to be a cause or the foundation of reality?

The phrase Ground of Being is useful because it avoids treating God as a very powerful object sitting somewhere before the universe. On this picture, God is the reason contingent reality exists at all.

Strong theistic case

“The question is not ‘what event happened before the universe?’ It is ‘why does contingent reality exist at all?’ God can be understood as the sustaining ground of every contingent thing, including the universe as a whole.”

Strong skeptical case

“This may simply rename the unexplained fact. If ‘God is the Ground of Being’ means ‘there must be some ultimate ground,’ the real work is still to establish why that ground must be a mind and why its existence is necessary.”

Simple example: Asking what holds up a building is different from asking what event happened immediately before the building was constructed. “Ground” here is about dependence, not necessarily about an earlier moment.

6. “What caused God?” and the question of special pleading

This is one of the most natural objections. If the argument says that things need causes or explanations, why should God be exempt? The answer depends entirely on which cosmological argument is being used.

Strong skeptical case

“You cannot say ‘everything needs a cause’ and then simply exempt God. If God can exist without a cause, perhaps the universe can too. You have only moved the unexplained stopping point one level higher.”

Strong theistic case

“A careful Kalam argument does not say everything needs a cause. It says everything that begins to exist needs a cause. Classical contingency arguments say contingent things need explanation. God is proposed as necessary or uncaused precisely because God is not a contingent thing that began to exist.”

Simple example: “Every person born has a biological parent” does not imply “every entity whatsoever has a biological parent.” The question is whether the distinction between contingent/necessary or beginning/uncaused is independently justified, rather than invented only to protect the conclusion.
What would count as genuine special pleading?

It would be special pleading if the argument simply said “everything requires an explanation—except God” with no relevant difference. It is not automatically special pleading to argue that a necessary being belongs to a different category from contingent things. The burden then shifts to explaining why that category exists and why God belongs in it.

7. Does a necessary foundation have to be personal?

This is the major bridge from generic cosmology to theism. Even if one grants a necessary foundation, why think it is a conscious agent rather than an impersonal reality?

Strong theistic case

“An impersonal necessary condition would exist without choosing to produce a contingent universe. If the foundation is timeless and the universe is not, a personal agent with the capacity to initiate a contingent state can explain why this universe exists rather than another—or none.”

Strong skeptical case

“That assumes a timeless mind can make a choice. It also assumes that the universe is contingent in the relevant sense. A necessary physical structure, a fundamental law, a quantum state or some deeper reality could be impersonal.”

Simple example: A mathematical truth does not “choose” to be true. If something like a necessary mathematical or physical structure could explain reality, necessity alone would not make it a person.
Where the disagreement remains: Cosmological arguments can make the demand for an ultimate explanation vivid, but the crucial premises remain contested: whether every contingent fact needs an explanation, whether an infinite explanatory regress is impossible or insufficient, whether absolute nothingness is genuinely possible, whether a necessary foundation exists, and whether that foundation would be personal. Even a successful cosmological argument would normally establish less than the full set of claims made by a particular religion.

Did the universe have a beginning?

The Kalam cosmological argument is distinct from the general contingency argument. It focuses on a temporal beginning. Modern cosmology matters, but the Big Bang is not identical to “creation from absolute nothing.”

Kalam cosmological argument

The familiar form is: whatever begins to exist has a cause; the universe began to exist; therefore the universe has a cause.

Strong theistic case

“If the universe genuinely began, it cannot be the earlier physical cause of itself. A cause beyond ordinary spacetime would explain why a temporal universe exists.”

Strong skeptical case

“The premises need argument. We do not know that the universe began in the absolute philosophical sense, and ‘cause’ normally describes an event occurring in time. A cause of time itself is conceptually difficult.”

Simple example: Asking what happened before the first moment of time may be like asking what is north of the North Pole. There may simply be no earlier time to refer to.

Earlier discussion emphasized an important distinction: different theories of the origin of time can make “before time” meaningless. This does not automatically refute a dependency-style theistic argument, but it blocks the simplistic inference that the Big Bang means “there was nothing, then God caused something.”

Big Bang, eternal and cyclic possibilities

The Big Bang model describes an early hot, dense expanding state. It does not by itself tell us whether absolute reality began, whether spacetime has a boundary, or whether a deeper theory underlies it.

Strong theistic case

“Even if current physics does not describe the first moment, the finite past suggested by standard cosmology is at least compatible with a beginning and therefore with a creator.”

Strong skeptical case

“Compatible is not the same as established. Eternal, bounce, cyclic and quantum-origin proposals illustrate that the philosophical question cannot simply be read off the Big Bang model.”

Simple example: A movie beginning at the first scene does not mean there was a physical explosion before the first frame; the concept of a beginning depends on what kind of thing the movie is.

Entropy / thermodynamic argument

The second law of thermodynamics says entropy tends to increase in an appropriate closed system. One theistic argument says that if the universe had existed forever in roughly its current thermodynamic regime, it should already be near heat death.

Strong theistic case

“If the universe has a finite usable supply of free energy and entropy has been increasing, a past-eternal universe seems difficult to reconcile with the observed low-entropy state.”

Strong skeptical case

“The argument depends on extrapolating present thermodynamic behavior into regimes where our current theories may not apply. Cosmological expansion and gravitational systems also make naive ‘the universe is one box of gas’ reasoning inadequate.”

Simple example: You cannot necessarily infer what happened billions of years ago by extending today's rules backward through a period where the rules' domain of validity is unknown.

The “what caused God?” challenge

If everything that begins needs a cause, a skeptic may ask what caused God. Kalam proponents normally reply that the premise concerns things that begin to exist, not everything without exception; a timeless necessary being is proposed as uncaused.

Strong theistic case

“God is not being inserted as an arbitrary exception. The proposed conclusion is precisely an uncaused necessary cause, not another contingent event.”

Strong skeptical case

“Then the argument needs to justify why a timeless personal mind is a better stopping point than a necessary universe or fundamental law. The exception is principled only if the necessary-being premise is independently credible.”

Where the disagreement remains: The strongest version does not say “science proves God.” It asks whether a beginning or finite thermodynamic history, together with philosophical premises about causation and explanation, makes theism more plausible.

Why this kind of universe?

This broad topic brings together arguments about the structure, order and apparent life-permitting character of the cosmos. Fine-tuning, initial conditions, laws of nature, mathematical order, beauty, and multiverse reasoning are related, but they are not identical arguments.

1. Fine-tuning: why do the basic parameters permit complex life?

The fine-tuning argument begins with the observation that some physical parameters appear to lie within ranges compatible with stable stars, heavy elements, complex chemistry and ultimately life.

Strong theistic case

“If a system has many adjustable settings and only a narrow combination allows it to work, intentional arrangement is a natural explanation. The constants of physics appear similarly constrained, so a universe deliberately set up for complexity is reasonable to consider.”

Strong skeptical case

“We do not know that the constants could actually have been different, or that all possible values were equally likely. You cannot simply say ‘the odds are tiny’ without a justified probability model.”

Simple example: A combination lock with one winning combination out of a billion looks surprising only if all combinations were genuinely possible and equally likely. Fine-tuning faces a similar question about the possible universes.
Technical point: probability and reference class

To call something extraordinarily improbable, we normally need a reference class or probability model. In cosmology, assigning probabilities to possible values of constants is difficult. This is one of the major technical objections to simplistic fine-tuning calculations.

2. Initial conditions: why did the universe begin in such a special state?

Fine-tuning can concern not only constants but the initial state of the universe. Cosmology raises questions about the extraordinarily low initial entropy, including the special gravitational conditions associated with the early universe.

Strong theistic case

“Even if the laws and constants are accepted as given, the initial state still appears remarkably special. The universe began in a condition capable of developing enormous complexity rather than in an arbitrary state.”

Strong skeptical case

“Calling an initial state improbable again requires knowing the probability distribution over possible initial states. We have one observed universe, and deeper physics may eventually explain why this state occurred.”

Simple example: A shuffled deck being in one particular order is surprising only relative to a model in which many orders were possible. If the deck was arranged intentionally, the same order has a different explanation.

3. Laws of nature: why are there stable, intelligible regularities?

Nature exhibits remarkably stable mathematical regularities. The argument from laws asks why there are such regularities at all and why they have the particular structure they do.

Strong theistic case

“The universe behaves as though it has deep rational order. A rational creator gives us a straightforward explanation for why nature has elegant, stable principles rather than being an unintelligible collection of unrelated events.”

Strong skeptical case

“Calling them ‘laws’ can mislead us. Physical laws may simply describe regularities. If a deeper physical theory explains those regularities, adding a lawgiver may not improve the explanation.”

Simple example: Saying “objects obey gravity” sounds like gravity is a command. In physics, a law is usually a mathematical description of how systems behave.
Deeper issue: are laws necessary, contingent, or descriptive?

Philosophers disagree about whether laws are genuinely governing facts, relations among properties, or compact descriptions of regularities. The theistic argument changes strength depending on which view is adopted. A skeptic can also ask whether invoking God merely relocates the question: why does God's nature produce these laws rather than others?

4. Mathematical order: why does mathematics describe nature so well?

The physical world is often described with surprisingly powerful and elegant mathematics. Mathematical structures developed as abstract reasoning can later prove useful for describing physical phenomena.

Strong theistic case

“Why should a physical universe be so deeply intelligible in mathematical terms? If both the human mind and the universe ultimately come from a rational source, the remarkable fit between mathematics and nature becomes less surprising.”

Strong skeptical case

“We selectively remember the mathematics that works. Physicists develop mathematical tools precisely because they are useful for describing patterns. Success does not establish a cosmic designer.”

Simple example: There are enormous numbers of mathematical ideas that are not useful in physics. We naturally notice the successful ones, so selection already plays a role in the story.

5. Beauty and elegance: is aesthetic order evidence of design?

Scientists and mathematicians often describe successful theories as elegant, simple or beautiful. Some theists see this as evidence that reality reflects a rational mind.

Strong theistic case

“The deepest physical theories often exhibit striking simplicity and mathematical beauty. If reality is ultimately grounded in intelligence, it makes sense that its structure would be elegant and intelligible.”

Strong skeptical case

“Beauty is partly a feature of human cognition. We prefer symmetry, simplicity and compression. A beautiful theory can reflect the way human minds perceive patterns rather than the intentions of a cosmic designer.”

Simple example: Symmetry often looks beautiful to humans. That tells us something about human perception; it does not by itself prove that the symmetrical thing was intentionally designed.

6. Anthropic reasoning: should we be surprised to observe a life-permitting universe?

The anthropic principle points out that observers can only find themselves in a universe compatible with observers.

Strong skeptical case

“We should not be surprised to find ourselves in a life-permitting universe. If the universe were incompatible with observers, nobody would be here asking the question.”

Strong theistic case

“That explains why observers see a life-permitting environment, but it does not explain why such an environment exists at all. The anthropic principle may be a selection effect rather than a complete explanation.”

Simple example: A fish can only observe a world in which fish can survive. That explains the fish's observation, but not necessarily why the pond exists.

7. Multiverse: is our universe one member of a much larger ensemble?

A multiverse could explain fine-tuning if different universes have different parameters and enough exist for some to permit life.

Strong skeptical case

“If there are enormous numbers of universes with different parameters, most may be sterile while a small fraction permit life. We necessarily find ourselves in one of the suitable ones. No designer is required to explain that selection effect.”

Strong theistic case

“The multiverse may explain apparent fine-tuning only by introducing an enormous unseen ensemble plus a mechanism that generates it. We can then ask why that mechanism exists and why its own parameters permit such an ensemble.”

Simple example: If a lottery runs a trillion independent draws, an extraordinary result is much less surprising somewhere in the total set. But you still need evidence that the lottery has a trillion draws.
Technical issue: measure and typicality

Multiverse models face the measure problem: how should probabilities be assigned across potentially infinite universes or regions? There is also a typicality question: if observers can exist in many different environments, why should we expect to be in a particular kind? These are serious technical issues, not automatic refutations.

8. What exactly does fine-tuning establish?

The central comparison is often presented as design versus chance, but that is too narrow. The real alternatives can include design, necessity, brute fact, multiverse selection effects, deeper physical theory, or some combination.

Strong theistic case

“When we encounter a highly constrained system that supports complex outcomes, intentional selection is often a reasonable explanation. If the universe could have been radically different but happens to fall in a narrow life-permitting range, design deserves serious consideration.”

Strong skeptical case

“The fact that design is possible does not show that it is probable. We need to compare design with multiverse hypotheses, brute facts and unknown physics. Fine-tuning is strongest as a comparative explanatory argument, not as a simple calculation proving God.”

Simple example: If you discover a complicated machine, design is a strong hypothesis because we already know machines are designed. We do not have an established sample of universes with known designers and non-designers from which to calculate comparable odds.
Where the disagreement remains: The universe does exhibit remarkable regularity, mathematical structure and conditions compatible with complex life. The disagreement is over what those facts imply. Fine-tuning can be interpreted as evidence for design, but its force depends on assumptions about possible universes and probabilities. Anthropic selection and multiverse models offer alternatives, while initial conditions, laws, mathematical order and beauty raise related but distinct questions. None of these arguments, by itself, establishes a particular religion.

Why is life possible and complex?

This broad topic asks two different questions that should not be conflated: How did the first life arise? and How did complex biological diversity arise once life existed? The first is abiogenesis; the second is evolutionary biology. Design arguments about biological complexity then ask whether natural evolutionary mechanisms are sufficient or whether a deeper explanation is needed.

1. Origin of life: how did the first self-replicating system arise?

Abiogenesis concerns the transition from non-living chemistry to the first life. Biological evolution presupposes some system capable of heredity and reproduction, so explaining evolution does not by itself explain the origin of that system.

Strong theistic case

“Evolution explains what happens once life is reproducing, but it does not by itself explain how the first information-bearing, self-replicating system appeared. The origin of life requires replication, heredity, energy use and organization. A purposeful origin is therefore a serious possibility.”

Strong skeptical case

“An incomplete scientific explanation is not evidence that a supernatural explanation is true. Chemistry can produce complex structures spontaneously, and origin-of-life research investigates pathways involving RNA-like molecules, autocatalytic chemistry, membranes and metabolism. We do not need the final answer before natural explanations can be investigated rationally.”

Key distinction: “Science has not completely solved abiogenesis” and “abiogenesis is impossible without God” are very different claims.
What is actually difficult?

Researchers must account for several interacting features: reliable replication, heredity, energy use, compartmentalization and the capacity for cumulative evolution. Different models attempt to solve these problems in different orders. The difficulty is real, but difficulty alone does not identify the correct explanation.

2. Biological complexity: does complexity require a designer?

Living organisms contain many interacting parts and highly organized processes. The design argument asks whether this organization is better explained by intelligence than by cumulative natural selection.

Strong theistic case

“Cells contain coordinated molecular systems that perform specific functions. In ordinary experience, complex functional organization is often associated with intelligence. It is reasonable to ask whether biological organization also reflects design.”

Strong skeptical case

“Biological complexity is exactly what cumulative selection can produce. Evolution does not require every component to appear fully formed. Existing structures can be modified, duplicated, repurposed or combined, while selection preserves variants that improve reproduction.”

Simple example: A complicated tool can be assembled deliberately, but complicated biological systems can also emerge through many small modifications when each step has consequences for survival and reproduction.

3. Genetic information: where does biological information come from?

DNA stores heritable information in sequences of chemical bases. Design arguments sometimes compare this with information produced by human minds and ask whether biological information requires an intelligent source.

Strong theistic case

“When we encounter a sequence that performs a highly specific function, intelligence is a familiar source of such organization in other contexts. Biological sequences can also be highly specific and functional, so their origin deserves explanation.”

Strong skeptical case

“DNA is not a human language in the relevant sense. Mutation generates variation and natural selection changes variant frequencies according to their effects. New functional sequences can arise through mutation, duplication, recombination and selection. Calling something ‘information’ does not itself show that a mind produced it.”

Important distinction: Mutations can be random with respect to adaptive need, while natural selection is non-random in retaining variants that reproduce more successfully. Evolution therefore is not simply “pure chance.”
What does “information” mean?

Information can mean Shannon information, algorithmic information, semantic information, or functional information. Arguments can become misleading when they move between these meanings without saying so. The definition matters before drawing a metaphysical conclusion.

4. Specified complexity: is functional complexity evidence of intelligence?

Specified complexity arguments emphasize that some biological structures are not merely complex but organized toward recognizable functions.

Strong theistic case

“A long random string and a highly functional sequence are not equally easy to explain. When a pattern is both complex and independently recognizable as functional, intelligence is a familiar explanation in other contexts.”

Strong skeptical case

“Natural selection itself produces functional specification. Once a population is filtered by survival and reproduction, surviving sequences will be disproportionately functional. Function is therefore not independent evidence of intelligence in the same way a human-authored message is.”

Simple example: If every generation of designs keeps the versions that work better, the final population can be highly functional without anyone directly selecting the final form.

5. Irreducible complexity: do some systems require all their parts at once?

Irreducible complexity argues that certain systems cannot be produced through gradual modification because several components are required for their current function.

Strong theistic case

“If a system only works when several components are present, removing one destroys the function. If no intermediate stage could perform a useful role, gradual evolution would seem unable to build the system.”

Strong skeptical case

“A system can be irreducible for its current function without being historically irreducible. Parts can have different functions at earlier stages, be repurposed, or be added to an existing system. Evolutionary pathways do not have to preserve the final function at every intermediate step.”

Simple example: A part unnecessary for one machine can be useful in another. Biology can similarly repurpose existing structures—a process called exaptation.

6. Does evolution explain away biological design arguments?

Natural selection can generate complex adaptation without foresight. This changes what a biological design argument has to establish.

Strong theistic case

“Evolution explains adaptation, but a theist can still ask why a universe with the chemistry, heredity, reproductive mechanisms and laws required for evolution exists at all. Evolution may explain biological complexity while leaving deeper questions about life open.”

Strong skeptical case

“Once a natural mechanism is demonstrated that can cumulatively generate complex adaptation, complexity itself becomes much weaker evidence for direct design. One cannot point to a feature that the mechanism is known to produce and treat the feature as evidence against the mechanism.”

Key distinction: Evolution does not require mutations to be directed toward future needs. It combines variation, inheritance and differential reproduction. Selection can be strongly directional even when individual mutations are not.

7. Could natural mechanisms still leave a deeper question?

A natural explanation can answer a how question without answering every why question. This is where biological arguments often become metaphysical.

Strong theistic case

“Even a complete account of mutation and selection would not automatically explain why there is a law-governed universe capable of producing life, or why life and consciousness arise at all. Theism can treat these as part of a larger explanation.”

Strong skeptical case

“A deeper question is not automatically a request for a supernatural answer. We should distinguish unanswered questions from evidence for God. If natural mechanisms explain the biological phenomenon, invoking God needs independent support.”

Where the disagreement remains: Abiogenesis and evolution are distinct questions. Evolution provides a powerful natural mechanism for cumulative adaptation and makes simple “it is complex, therefore it was directly designed” arguments much weaker. Origin-of-life research remains an active problem, but lack of a complete account does not by itself establish a divine cause. Information, specified-complexity and irreducible-complexity arguments depend heavily on definitions and on whether natural mechanisms can generate the relevant organization. Even if biology left a deeper explanatory question, another argument would still be needed to identify that explanation with a personal God.

Arguments that arise from the scientific intelligibility of the world

Some earlier arguments are best treated as related questions rather than independent proofs.

Science-friendly universe / intelligibility

Why is the universe mathematically understandable by creatures who evolved on one small planet?

Strong theistic case

“The deep correspondence between human rationality, mathematics and physical structure is unsurprising if both originate in a rational creator.”

Strong skeptical case

“We are the descendants of organisms that survived by learning regularities. Science is possible precisely because regularities exist; there is no need to add a mind unless the regularity itself demands one.”

Cosmic origin as a transcendent-cause argument

This argument combines the existence of space, time, matter and laws into one request for an explanation outside the physical system.
